There are a variety of reasons why an individual may want to conduct an asset background check of someone that they have dealings with. They may want to ensure that a potential business partner has the assets that they claim to have or may want to weigh the risks of loaning the person money. In regards to assets, a free background check of someone will have limited information due to the privacy laws restricting the disclosure of certain types of financial information.

An asset background check of someone will generally tend to focus on the tangible assets that an individual holds, such as real estate holdings, company assets, cars, planes, and boats. Other types of financial information, such as bank account statements and investment holdings, typically cannot be obtained with a background check as disclosing that information without authorization is considered a crime. Any individual that promises that they can obtain this information for you is either forging it or may be obtaining it by illegal means.

A free background check of someone will provide basic information about an individual's assets, but will generally not provide the level of detail that you would like. If there is a true need for the disclosure of financial assets, permission may be obtained legally through the court system, as long as the person can prove to the court that the legal action is warranted. This permission is only granted in select situations.
