A SLED background check is the acronym for a background check conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and includes records of crimes committed in South Carolina. Anyone can request a SLED background check on themselves to see what is included in the report that may come back to haunt them at a later date.

A SLED background check can be used for a number of different purposes. The reports have been requested to determine a person's eligibility for an employment position or to determine whether the person is authorized to purchase a firearm from a licensed gun dealer. The information contained within the report may also contain information about the person's previous addresses or any aliases that the person may have used in the past.

The SLED background check will only contain information about crimes committed in the state of South Carolina and will not list items that the person has been convicted of in other states. Many states maintain their own databases for convicted individuals, and if the person has lived in more than one state, the records of each state must be searched individually, unless the searcher is willing to pay to have a national search conducted.
